Tobias Kunz - PhD Student in our Humanoid Robotics Lab has received the prestigious JSPS Summer Fellowship to travel to Japan for Research and Cultural Exchange.

This award is in recognition of Tobias' excellent work in dynamic planning and the CONAN (CONtact ANticipation) project. We will now have the opportunity to continue this research in collaboration with Prof. Takanishi's Laboratory at WASEDA University.

Ana Huaman - PhD Student in our Humanoid Robotics Lab has received the highly competitive Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future fellowship to support her graduate studies.

This is an award given to female students that will be role models for the next generation of students in developing countries. We are all very proud of Ana's achievements and her contributions to our research!

Congratulations to Jon Scholz! Our paper "Combining Motion Planning and Optimization for Flexible Robot Manipulation" received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Humanoid Robotics.

On 11/17/2010, I had a great time visiting CNN. This was the first appearance of Golem Krang on TV! They showed lots of recent videos of GK and Ali Velshi interviewed me about the project on The Big I Segment of CNN Newsroom.

Awesome job by everyone at the lab pulling together the preparations for the new robot demonstrations. Special thanks to Neil, Martin and Kasemsit for their day and night efforts.

November 13th 2010 marks a special day for our lab. Our very own Hyun-Soo Yi and Cindy Chuiying Tse were married in a beautiful ceremony involving both Korean and Chinese traditions. A real Humanoids Wedding!

The whole lab went to the celebration and joined the happy couple. We wish them the best of luck in their new life together.

Here are some pictures courtesy of Tobias. Click here for more photos.

Our lab had the great pleasure to visit Taipei, Taiwan for the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2010). Aside from being our first time in beautiful Taiwan, to our knowledge - there were a bunch of other firsts: The first NAMO (Navigation Among Movable Obstacles) algorithm that performs real-time planning as it perceives the world and gathers information. The most effective public domain algorithm for mixed palletizing.

Our project on Navigation Among Movable Obstacles in Uncertain Environments has been awarded support by the National Science Foundation!

We are honored and grateful for this support and recognition.

Last week, we took second place at the AAAI robot chess competition! This was a fantastic event where different kinds of robots played chess against each other. The major point was not so much to play good chess, but rather to move the pieces effectively and handle complications like piece displacements, captures, castles and various forms of uncertainty.

Recently, there has been lots of exciting progress on Golem. He now has an arm! New aluminum wheels, Pirelli tires and whole set of new controllers. He's also able to balance with the arm on. We are continuing to model the robot to get more accurate representations, perform highly dynamic control and integrate arm motion.

It has been a crazy year at Golems.org. Time to start catching up. Recently the students got together and built an entirely new lab for Golem Krang. The lab has much more space, and important safety features like a steel guardrail and an overhead gantry that supports the robot. Most importantly, yes, the carpet does spell out "GOLEM."

Here are some pics from the construction. Click here for more photos.

Congratulations to the three excellent teams that sent papers into ICRA this week!

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this happen. Yesterday, Krang balanced with a torso on!!! Will and Jon got it up and running. Here's a pic, and I'm looking forward to some movies.

Yesterday was a big day for our Humanoids Lab. We had our first submissions to the International Conference on Humanoid Robotics!

I'm especially proud of Misha and JW who stayed up with me until 3AM last night to get these papers in shape. Great work guys! This has been a really productive month with many new things learned and accomplished.

I'm happy to report that Golem Krang's design and control concepts are now *patent pending* - Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

Wednesday night, Paramount premiered a trailer for Transformers 2 and screened the original Transformers movie. Krang came to Atlantic Station to check it out! We had a lot of fun showing off all everyone's excellent work for the last few months.

Pushkar took some nice pictures of the event:
