October 2012 MacGyver Robots In The Making

Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research we are now developing a MacGyver Robot. Beyond NAMO, which studied how to move objects out ofthe way we are now investigating how robots can utilize objects to create a way to achieve their goals.

    Our new project is to allow humanoid robots and mobile manipulators to autonomously reason about the properties of environment objects and utilize them to complete environment tasks. For example, we expect robots to consider using boards as levers, bridges and other simple machines achieve complete tasks of navigation and manipulation.
